Hi Marketing Found an insightful idea to the question posed by a fellow Hi blogger after researching a few insightful ideas & concepts to our Hi Beyond Question at IBM Smarter Cities Blog ;
By looking at increasing traffic congestion and solutions to make cities more Sustainable by using
the Internet to find such solutions by Creating Value.
Traffic systems are part of a larger system;
Rethinking how we get from point A to point B means applying new technology and new policies to old assumptions and habits. It means improving the drivers' experience, not just where and when they drive. And it could lead to advances in the cars we drive, the roads we drive them on, and the public transit we might take instead.
For example, seeing a city's traffic in a consolidated, real-time view can help anticipate problems, alleviate congestion and decrease emergency-response times.IBM Intelligent Transportation, a compliment to the Intelligent Operations Center for Smarter Cities, enables advanced analysis of the many factors that make up traffic flow, and gives planners and responders a comprehensive look at the state of their city's roadways on ground level.

The Measures - HVAC High Efficiency Systems Strategy!!!
The Measures details the Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning High Efficiency Systems Strategy (HVAC HESS) under the government's National Strategy on Energy Efficiency (NSEE) that aims to drive long term improvements in the energy efficiency of HVAC systems nationally.
It includes more than 20 separate but complementary measures across eight priority areas, grouped under the three broad strategic initiatives of people, practices and systems.
The strategy addresses many non-technical barriers to energy efficiency while identifying and promoting highly efficient technical solutions, systems optimisation processes and creating the environment in which energy efficiency gains are valued, measurable and sustainable.
It takes a whole of life perspective in targeting HVAC efficiency improvement, including those achievable through the design, manufacture, installation, operation and maintenance stages of the HVAC life cycle.
It recognises that large efficiency gains can be achieved through the maintenance and operation of existing systems in existing building stock, and seeks to establish national system standards of documentation for design, installation, operation and maintenance of HVAC equipment/systems.

‘See smaller VOC leaks from a safer distance’
Flir Systems has released a technical report detailing how developments in optical gas imaging (OGI) technology are allowing smaller volatile organic compound (VOC) leaks to be detected from a safer distance. Detecting leaks of volatile, gaseous compounds can be dangerous; therefore operational safety of any detection technique is vitally important for maintenance engineers. OGI cameras make use of non-contact measuring infrared technology that can detect, in real time, small leaks from several metres away and big leaks from hundreds of metres away.

‘Porosity testing vital on pipelines and offshore structures’
Ensuring the long-term protection of parts exposed to the extremely harsh conditions found in offshore environments requires intact anti-corrosion protective coatings. Any void, gap or pore in the coatings can significantly shorten the lifetime of protected components. To control the quality of these crucial coatings, porosity testing is mandatory, as this application note from Fischer explains.

‘Can improved traceability lower costs? Five steps global manufacturers can take as part of a traceability program to directly impact the bottom line’
Most global manufacturers operate across many locations, offer many products, each with dozens of options or variations. Many use parts and materials supplied through a variety of distribution channels across the world. This results in vast amounts of data to manage for traceability and containment. Although traceability is typically seen as a cost burden imposed by regulators’ or customers’ demands, this paper from Apriso will present an argument suggesting that with effective processes, it can actually help cut costs.

‘Eight things to consider when choosing an outdoor humidity instrument’
Outdoor humidity and temperature measurement is essential for applications such as energy management and indoor climate control. Just one outdoor humidity sensor typically optimises the energy efficiency of cooling equipment.
However, if this sensor is not accurate, both energy efficiency and human comfort may be compromised.
This application note from Vaisala discusses using solar radiation shields; guidelines for installing outdoor humidity instruments; the elements of a good radiation shield; the most common humidity parameters used in free cooling; and more.

‘Industrial network management: finding the perfect solution’
If you manage or operate an industrial automation network you will already be familiar with network management.
All of the activities that are involved in configuring, maintaining, monitoring and troubleshooting your network are network management tasks.
For example, it is important to know which parts of your network are dependent on each other, how heavily each section of the network is being used, whether some devices are more prone to failure than others and when devices should be replaced to prevent failure while in use.
In industrial networks, it is likely that most of these complicated tasks are done manually.
Wouldn't it be ideal to automate these management tasks with software, in order to improve the efficiency of the process? As this white paper from Amplicon explains, that’s exactly what network management software (NMS) does.

Few Americans seem concerned about or even aware of the water shortage issue:
The buzz seems to always surround energy conservation, but get ready — water conservation is also at the heart of President Obama's legislative priorities. That and the fact that the U.S. is on a path toward severe water shortages and you'll see big changes in the near future.
Water is the next great frontier. With worldwide population growth, limited water supplies caused by droughts, and growing urbanization, water is becoming harder to come by. Water efficiency and the legislation that regulates it is becoming just as important as energy efficiency.
Just one year away: starting in April 2015, new water-efficiency standards will go into effect. Back in April 2010, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Steven Chu announced the finalization of higher energy efficiency standards for a key group of heating equipment that together will save consumers up to $10 billion and prevent the release of up to 164 million metric tons of carbon dioxide over 30 years.
These new standards will impact residential water heating systems, but that is by no means the end of the story. The Obama administration is focused not only on energy conservation, but water conservation as well. There is an interesting PDF you can download by clicking the following link here &/Or view & save below at...,
This focus is for one very good reason—in a word, drought. The U.S. has been suffering from low water conditions for decades, but the issue is becoming more acute with each passing year.
As of August 2013, nine U.S. cities were in a state of severe water problems and that impacts not only potable water, but the water used in both residential and commercial HVAC applications as well.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency said in September 2013 that 36 states are facing local or regional water shortages and that by 2030, the demand for fresh water in the United States will exceed supply by as much as 40 percent.
And yet, few Americans seem concerned about or even aware of the issue.
This large-scale study compares building performance data worldwide from the highest-rated large green buildings of the past 10 years, using actual energy and water operating data from 57 projects in 18 countries.
It offers architects, engineers and project developers a new way to understand how high-performance buildings can be designed and constructed.
This is an excellent call to action for people worldwide on both the energy and water issues we face. In addition, Yudelson produced three videos on the coming crises:
Part 1. The Coming Water Crisis;
Part 2. Changing the Way We Build Buildings;
Part 3. Taking Water Conservation Action;
Meanwhile, in Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) developed the Industrial, Commercial, and Institutional (ICI) Water Management Program to help state-based businesses, industries and institutions improve their water efficiency.
This group has done a number of studies on water use and found that, in Massachusetts, 35 percent is used in cooling applications.
- "It even recommends replacing water-cooled equipment with air-cooled units where economically feasible".
In July 2013, HPAC Engineering Editorial Advisory Board member Larry Clark wrote a blog titled, “Water Matters!,” in which he highlights Florida’s efforts in water conservation.
He noted that the state has been identified by the Natural Resources Defense Council as one of five that are in danger of facing high-risk water shortages by 2050.
“All of us in the industry recognize HVAC is a major consumer of energy, and we spend a lot of time and money trying to find ways to make equipment more efficient but HVAC equipment doesn’t just use a lot of energy; it also can use a lot of water.
For example, a 300-ton cooling tower can evaporate 12 to 13 gpm and, with typical drift and bleed rates, require 18 to 19 gpm in makeup water. And that makeup usually is potable water from the local utility.”
Even the mighty Colorado River isn't immune.
According to the Southern Nevada Water Authority, the Colorado River, which provides approximately 90 percent of Southern Nevada’s water supply, continues to experience serious and sustained drought conditions. As a result, Lake Mead’s water levels have dropped more than 100 ft. since January 2000, and Lake Mead is at less than half capacity. Water shortages and critical infrastructure outages are possible should these conditions persist.
The Denver Water utility requires all water used for evaporative or refrigerated cooling and air conditioning, including equipment such as condensers, and processes, to be recycled or reused.
New York City requires recirculated water for medium and large refrigeration and air-cooled systems; properties with steam-source refrigeration must use some condensate for cooling tower makeup water.
There certainly are many more examples of water-shortage issues and, as an industry, we can expect local, state, and the federal governments to begin upgrading and passing new regulations and ordinances to safeguard the water supply.
