Hi Design Engineering, News!, Ambient air manufacture for vertical carbon nanofibres!.

Hi Design Engineering, Ambient air manufacture for vertical carbon nanofibres.

Researchers from North Carolina State University have demonstrated that vertically aligned carbon nanofibres (VACNFs) can be manufactured using ambient air, making the manufacturing process safer and less expensive.

VACNFs hold promise for use in gene-delivery tools, sensors, batteries and other technologies.
Conventional techniques for creating VACNFs rely on the use of ammonia gas, which is toxic.
‘This discovery makes VACNF manufacture safer and cheaper, because you don’t need to account for the risks and costs associated with ammonia gas,’ said Dr Anatoli Melechko, an adjunct associate professor of materials science and engineering at NC State and senior author of a paper on the work. ‘This also raises the possibility of growing VACNFs on a much larger scale.’
In the most common method for VACNF manufacture, a substrate coated with nickel nanoparticles is placed in a vacuum chamber and heated to 700 degrees Celsius.
The chamber is then filled with ammonia gas and either acetylene or acetone gas, which contain carbon.
When a voltage is applied to the substrate and a corresponding anode in the chamber, the gas is ionized. This creates plasma that directs the nanofibre growth.
The nickel nanoparticles free carbon atoms, which begin forming VACNFs beneath the nickel catalyst nanoparticles. However, if too much carbon forms on the nanoparticles it can clog the passage of carbon atoms to the growing nanofibres.
Ammonia’s role in this process is to keep carbon from forming a crust on the nanoparticles, which would prevent the formation of VACNFs.
‘We didn't think we could grow VACNFs without ammonia or a hydrogen gas,’ Melechko said in a statement.
Melechko’s team tried the conventional vacuum technique, using acetone gas. However, they found that the process worked when ambient air replaced the ammonia gas.
The size, shape and alignment of the VACNFs were said to be consistent with the VACNFs produced using conventional techniques.
‘We did this using the vacuum technique without ammonia,’ Melechko said. ‘But it creates the theoretical possibility of growing VACNFs without a vacuum chamber. If that can be done, you would be able to create VACNFs on a much larger scale.’

Lightweight ST series torque limiter from Tandler Precision ensures high reliability!.

ST series of torque limiters
Tandler Precision has introduced the ST series torque limiter from RW.
The tiny 160,000Nm torque limiter is claimed to offer a number of benefits compared with shear pin and hydraulic alternatives.
Hi Product Overview:
According to the company, the ST torque limiter is up to 23 per cent more compact, with respect to outer diameter at a given torque, by comparison with its mechanical competitors. The difference in overall coupling weight in the most extreme case is one ton.
The RW operating principle utilises disc springs, allowing the ST’s immediate re-engagement following a stoppage. There is no need to replace any expendable parts such as pins or valves, and furthermore its disengagement does not result in hydraulic oil being sprayed onto adjacent components.
The ST torque limiter is also said to be reliable thanks to RW’s patented spring-loaded ball detent design, meaning that the coupling will always disengage at exactly the same torque. The disengagement value is easily set via the torque adjustment range that is engraved on the body of the coupling.
The ST series comprises three application-specific classes: the ST1 is for indirect drives and is suitable for power transfer in heavy machine construction; for direct drives, the ST2 includes in its design an elastomer compensation element that accommodates axial, lateral and angular misalignment; and the ST3 model is configured as a torsion-resistant coupling.

Key features and benefits:

  • The ST series torque limiter is lighter in weight than alternative designs, making assembly easier and quicker.
  • It is designed to be easily adjustable and can be serviced in situ.
  • Complete reliability is ensured as the coupling always disengages at exactly the same torque.
  • The difference in overall coupling weight means that considerably greater circumferential speed is possible.
  • Lower overall weight reduces mass moment of inertia as a consequence of lower flywheel mass. In addition to shortening the acceleration and braking processes, the system achieves greater dynamics, which in turn translates into higher productivity.
  • If minimal space and high torque are the prerequisites for an application, up to 12 actuation elements can be fitted or the number of disc springs increased to produce greater force. Such measures can increase performance by as much as 25 per cent.
  • The ST torque limiter is available for torques from 1,000–160,000Nm in four body sizes and shaft diameters from 40–290mm.
  • Where the ST torque limiter is to be used in aggressive, corrosive environments, a stainless steel version can be supplied. Atex Certification  for hazardous areas Zone 1/21 and Zone 2/22 is also available.

Hi Hybrid Cooling In Power Generation of Critical Thinking & Discussion!.

Hi Hybrid Cooling In Power Generation of Critical Thinking & Discussion!.

So What is Hybrid Cooling & Why Not Join Or View The Complete Online Discussion Forum On Sustainable Engineering by visiting the direct link for IHS Global Spec CR4 Forum Provided Below.

Hybrid cooling basically involves part direct air cooling of loop water that is being used to condense steam exhaust (from simple or combined cycle generation), along with some form of cooling that reduces the loop water temperature to slightly below ambient.

This is as compared to recirculating open- system cooling (cooling towers) that do not use as much water as once-through cooling, yet consume quite a bit more water (by evaporation and blow-down). Water resources in many areas are becoming taxed to their limits (or beyond), thus it behooves the engineering community at large to think in ways that reduce drastically or eliminate water consumption in power generation.

Hi Is Your Chiller Having a Heart Attack? Chiller Heart Disease.

Heart Attack
Is Your Chiller Having a Heart Attack?

"A heart attack begins when blood flow to a part of the heart muscle becomes blocked. A fatty material, called plaque, builds up on the walls of the coronary arteries."
Those arteries supply blood and oxygen to the heart, making them essential for the heart to function properly. When the arteries become clogged a heart attack is most often the end result.
Your chiller could be experiencing an event similar to a heart attack.
Even the best water treatment can’t stop the formation of mineral deposits on chiller condenser tubes.
Without ongoing maintenance to remove these deposits, through chemical and mechanical means, these deposits begin to act as channels that provide optimal areas where more scale can build up.
Much like the plaque that can build up in your veins, once the process starts, little can be done to prevent it.
Ultimately it leads to scale buildup that puts stress on pumps and other key components just as coronary arteries can become clogged and put stress on your heart. If left untreated, a chiller can fail in the same way a heart fails.
Symptoms of underlying “chiller heart disease” include:
An increase in the condenser outlet temperature. For every one degree increase in the temperature of the leaving condenser water, the chiller efficiency decreases by up to 2%. The culprit is typically scaled tubes.
An increase in refrigerant approach temperature, indicating deteriorating chiller efficiency. Again, usually due to scaled tubes.
Chillers account for over 50% of the electrical usage in most facilities, according to the North Carolina Energy Office.
The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that chillers are expending up to an additional 30% in energy through inefficiencies.
The main culprit behind the inefficiencies is scaling on tube surfaces.
There are more than 100,000 inefficient chillers in the United States, costing industries billions of dollars each year in wasted energy.
“People think that water treatment alone will keep tubes clear and chillers running efficiently. Well, it always comes as a surprise when things go south."
“The smallest amount of scale really lowers chiller efficiencies. It is surprising how scale and corrosion are linked as well as bio-fouling. All these processes end up allowing even more deposition and fouling to take place, so make sure that regular cleanings and inspections go hand-in-hand with water treatment.”
Once this process starts, additional water treatments can do little to prevent future build up and in most cases will not reverse its effects.
Ongoing maintenance at scheduled intervals, or as symptoms appear, is the best defense against your chiller’s heart attack.
A water flush with a tube cleaner cleans tubes quickly, removing any clogs.
“How To Clean Chiller Tubes” checklist details the step-by-step tube cleaning process.
Tube cleaners can clean straight and spiral enhanced chiller tubes.
Rotary tube cleaning technology removes tough deposit build up quickly.
chemical descalers work to soften thick scale, speeding up the cleaning process and periodic descaling prevents future build up.
It’s important to keep your HVAC cooling system in top shape. That means cleaning your HVAC cooling towers and chiller tubes as well as your air conditioner’s coils.
